Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC): How it Works to Protect You

 

A Biosafety Cabinet (BSC) is an engineering measure designed to shield lab personnel, the surrounding area, and work items from contact with infectious or biohazardous aerosols and splashes. The three States of Protection

Class I Biological safety cabinet

Work with biological material in Risk Groups 1, 2, and 3 (RG1, RG2, and RG3, respectively) is appropriate for Class I BSCs.

Class II Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC)

ü  It is utilized while working with low to moderate risk biological agent

ü  Biosafety Levels: 1, 2 and 3

 

Class III Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC)

Risk Group 4 agents employ Class III BSC, which offers the maximum level of personnel safety. It is acceptable for use in laboratories with Biosafety Levels 3 and 4.

How it works?

The maximum level of protection for the environment, the product, and the user is provided by a Class 3 cabinet, which offers the same protection as a Class 2 but is made for working with highly contagious substances classified as Biosafety Level 4.

It is mostly used when handling biological substances that carry an extremely high risk of harm.

To guarantee that no particles may seep out into the space, this sort of cabinet is completely sealed and pressure tested. Two HEPA filters separate the exhaust air from the supply air before it is released into the environment.  The operator uses thick rubber gloves that are a component of the Biosafety Cabinet to reach the work area.
